I know a number of you have been asking/speculating about this features role. Well, I have news.

World Map is now operational (in UTT3). I downloaded a nice map of Middle Earth and have experimented with a few features in the World Map editor.

You can easily set conditions for map points to appear, such as alignment, race or tokens carried and such. You can also add actions to take place when a map point is selected and the travel button clicked - this means, yes, random roadside encounters are possible and easy to setup!

Wait-- Neverwinter Nights 2 offers a more Baldur's Gate kind of travel..? Excellent! It can be rather frustrating walking from the Greyhavens to Minas Tirith. Random roadside encounters (I'm assuming orcs, bandits, wolves..?) also seem like a very good addition, as opposed to always have treants in the forest... ice trolls in the mountains... orcs and goblins in the mines "in_this_location".

Indeed -There are now different types of transition; The traditional area transition and now, World Map Transitions. The WM transition, when entered, brings up the World Map. This map has icons on it to represent regions you can travel to - click to travel!

Indeed, encounters can be random. The approach i'll take will most likely be a pool of small exteriors designed for these encounters. One exterior will be randomly selected if a roadside encounter occurs. Depending on where you are in the world will reflect on the type of possible encounters to spawn and the actual probability of encountering enemies. For instance, in the Misty Mountains, probability of a roadside encounter is higher than that on the Great East Road. In the Misty Mountains, one may face trolls and Orcs - not just goblins, which may be bumped into rarely on the Great East Road.

Certainly, though - creatures will still remain in their "homes". Fangorn will still have Ents in it, though im sure we can think of more creatures to add to it...it is a forest after all :)
