A thread which will give official status on the project at certain intervals.

Much has been discussed and done already. I now think it's time to confirm the official direction for UTT3 to begin with. The following is the official situation.

Because UTT2 is still proving as popular as ever, with much new content planned, devoted players and staff, I have decided to allow UTT2 to remain online as our Community Persistent World Server on a permanent basis*. There is no intention to produce a sequel Untold Tales persistent world using NWN2 at this time. UTT2 will continue to be the "main server", where the heart of the series lies. Therefore, our plans for NWN2 have shifted to something that I've kept on hold for some time...

On serveral previous occasions, I have mentioned some additions to the Untold Tales series in the form of single party + DM campaign games, run on seperate servers, as a seperate entity within the community. This project never really went beyond the planning stages and building concepts. This was mainly due to (at the time) low staffing levels and time and also the limitations of the NWN1 toolset in getting our resources and settings moved to a fresh module each time. Other than that, I believe we had some potentially successful and sound plans. NWN2 is now here and it has changed things.

Untold Tales III is going to happen, but to begin with, it will be a series of (some linked, some unique) campaigns, whose intended audience will be single parties supervised by a DM, much like the classic PnP experience. I have already spoken to some of you about this and there's been many questions and I'm sure there are more to come. I will do my best to answer these on the forum over the weeks and months to come. There are some frequent questions - those I will answer now.

Q. How can you run these games 24/7?

A. We won't be. This won't be a persistent world format. Games will be run on demand instead. It will be run via an advertisement, apply, approval process - much like Neverwinter Connections. I will explain this more another time, but hopefully you get the jist of it.

Q. Does this mean that UTT2 will be offline when you run these games?

A. No. UTT3 campaign games are a seperate gaming service we will be providing. They will have their own server.

Q. Do our characters pass over between campaign games and persistent world?

A. Its a bit up in the air right now, but yes and no. You wont be able to pass characters from campaign to PW - thats because no NWN2 pw exists and characters are not directly compatible between games. There's nothing to stop you recreating your UTT2 characters for the campaigns though. However, you can be sure that some of the campaigns will allow you to use the same character throughout as they will be linked.

Q. Why campaigns? Why not go straight to UTT3?

A. Weighing things up, I see no need to race ahead and make a sequel to UTT2 because it isn't required right now. UTT2 has proven it has much more still to offer, especially with new players still joining us and staying. More community resources are in the pipeline along with lots of our own creations too. I believe that what players want out of an RPG is already here, and will satisfy those needs for years to come.

I've decided to begin campaign work because it will compliment the successful UTT2 with a series of small games designed for the fans of the series. Utilising the latest modding technology, we can produce some games which are set strongly in the UTT series and delve that extra bit deeper into Midlde Earth. Making a 20 hour campaign, for instace, allows us to concentrate on a certain aspect of Middle Earth - this means greater detail and more sophisticated plots and activities; something single party play affords us.

So this is the direction now being taken. I will be giving specifics on the first campaign soon. As a feature of all the games though, UTT3 campign series will have:

- Middle Earth Races, Subraces and materials.
- Customised classes, feats and spells
- Middle Earth crafting system
- Prestige classes specific to each campaign
- Responsive environment - your actions will have consequences
- Interesting and fun companions

Some of the above are already being discussed in various threads. Any questions, please drop me an e-mail or post them on the NWN2 forum.

* = Naturally this will cease should activity plumet or the means to support NWN cease.

Thanks for the update! One question, though: Would it be possible for a relatively stable group to apply to play one of the campaigns? For example, the Tirin Kormi might have a mission to one of the in-depth areas. If every one of these is done with a DM in attendance, they could be somewhat tailored.

Guilds may play the campaigns and im sure arrangements can be made for them all to play at once.

Content tailored to guilds is not something I can promise and would really be influenced by the popularity of the campaign format. What also needs ro be rememebered is that the campaigns are a series of areas all tied to a specific plot - you won't be visiting them whenever you wish - the plot will cause you to end up in certain areas. Campaigns will generally focus on a specific area of middle earth, so you wont always be wandering from one side of the world to the other.

Sounds really interesting...
I like the fact that people will thereby be encouraged to set a party up and request a DM, I like the pen and paperness of it all (I'm quite excited, my mate Beatskins' PC might be able to run NWN2, so I might get to see what it looks like soon).
I agree that with the very high standard of development and play in UTT2 it still has rather a lot of life in it, and I for one are very glad it is sticking around :)

Sounds like a great addition to the UTT series.

Now I just have to allocate more time to concentrate on completing the single player NWN2 O.C so I can get back on the MERP bandwagon

I have here an introduction which talks a little about what will be going on in the first campaign game. It's still unnamed and will probabaly remain so till its finished so we can come up with a good name that embodies what we've made.

A NWN2 Module by Wireplay NWN set in Tolkien's Middle Earth
Module Story by DM Kev and Avalyn
Module by DM Kev

Nestled deep in Mirkwood, to the north of the mountains, lies the little known Vale of Serenity. Hallowed ground, this tranquil, silent vale is the resting place of fallen Elves, from countless centuries past. Nobody walks this sacred ground, save birds, beasts and the hand chosen Vale Guards; Elven warriors of great skill who keep a constant watch over the Vale and the network of tombs and halls running under the earth. So serene a place should stay so, but times are now changing…

A great arm of shadow stretches northwards from southern Mirkwood, ensnaring all life in its ghostly shroud and bending it to its masters will. The once peaceful, unmarred Vale will soon become a horrific place of walking dead and great danger. But something has happened that even the Necromancer of Mirkwood could not predict after he departed. The shadow spreads unevenly and roams unruly, almost as if it were serving a different master.

When a company of Dol Guldur make camp nearby the Vale, they are unknowingly embarking on a journey that will take them far beyond familiar surroundings and into the jaws of an enemy so truly frightening, that they will never look at life quite the same way again. It’s the start of an epic tale, an untold tale which will present moments of fear, challenges, bloodshed, laughter and hope. One company can see it through, how they do this, is in their hands.

The first untold tale begins soon…

The "scouting" of locations for our first game is just about done for exteriors. It will probabaly feature 4, unless we have a major rethink. These 4 areas are quite large and will be used quite frequently.

My attention turns to interiors soon - there will be a fair bunch of these. None of this is to keep the server hardware happy, its just the nature of this particular game myself and Avalyn have written. If wewanted an all exterior area game, we could do it. As this is a campaign game, we can create multiple modules and split areas over them and have the game jump to the desired module - just like the single player game does.

I'll be bringing out more details very soon. And more piccys.

Watch this space.

UTT3 is a shelved project for the time being with small ideas being added to it from time to time.

It's not a dead idea...it's just laying dormant...

Is there much demand for a fresh, new version of UTT in either NWN format?

Fore sure! NWN1 please, since the PW support is slightly better in my oppinion.

I'd say that if we do launch UTT3 we definitely do it in NWN1 - more people seem to have machines capable of running it, and PW support is much better. It would also be a good chance to check over our work and look at vital/non vital areas to maybe reduce some server load.

I know elsewhere players have called for areas to be expanded - particularly where roads head in their direction - this isn't realistic for the machiens we run the game on. If anything a slight paring down of areas may be needed - I for one would still like to see roads leading in the correct directs though - just for aesthetics stake.

If by "fresh, new" you mean "redone from scratch", then I don't see a point of doing that for NWN1. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with UTT2, and making further incremental improvements to it are likely give better results faster than any rewrite.

I know elsewhere players have called for areas to be expanded - particularly where roads head in their direction - this isn't realistic for the machiens we run the game on.
Do you mean the servers won't be able to handle the load? Or the extra areas are a burden on client machines as well, even though the player is always in a single area at any given time?

Anyway, what with all the recent expansions, there are already so many areas it's easy to spend several hours just exploring the surface (and that a low-level character can do so too - for the most part ;) - is a good thing as well).

Lorien

I was talking server load - although we're looking at reducing that somewhat.

DM_Kev

By fresh and new it would not mean a total re-write.

Design and presentation, in terms of areas in UTT2 is very high quality and in the event of a UTT3 project, we'd most likely recycle the vast majority of areas and just concentrate the areas where we feel the need for improvement.

The bulk of the efforts would go into UTT2's weaker points and introducing some of the ideas that we cannot introduce at this time due to the established system in place which would be very time consuming and difficult to replace.

A UTT3 is certainly on the cards at some point in the future, but only when we have a clear picture of what it would look like.
