The Custom Portrait Thread

I've noticed an increasing number of players (including myself, it seems) appearing with the familiar 'shadowy dude' portrait of late, and a few people with their character portraits inserted in their signatures. Fair enough, most of the CEP and standard portraits are a bit rubbish, and it can be very hard to find one that fits the character you have in mind.

So I thought 'let's make a thread where anyone with a custom portrait can post the link so it's easy for everyone to be up to date without having to write links down or ask each individual character'. And so, here it is.

I'll make a start with my characters (Both will shortly be updated, with any luck):

Custom portraits have been brought up before. You can't just "add" a custom portrait to the game without the server adding it on. I doubt you'll be able to use these in-game, but it's nice to see how you want us to imagine your character. :) (I'm assuming that's the real reason for this thread :P)

To see the portrait just put the files in the portraits subdirectory of your NWN folder ;)
Mine can be found in the signature...

Kyle is right, you can use custom portraits. If the server has the custom portrait loaded, everyone will see it. If not, they see a blank white portrait unless they do as Kyle said and put it in to their portrait sub-directory.

Perhaps I should make clear one or two things -

1. This does work, all it requires if for both clients to have the same portrait, and

2. You need to post a link to the actual files that you have in your portraits folder. A screenshot will not work, as the filename must be identical on both clients

for Huck , i'm sorry , but I downloaded the whole pack ( 7,xx MB ) and now i dont know what is the right portrait . So , i think , the only thing to do could be to download the entire frodo's portraits pack , which link I've already submitted ...

This is correct the server doesn't need the portrait, just yourself and anyone who wants to see it.

As to the post editing, the way these forums work you only have a 20 minute edit wondow (or is it 30).

Ahhh! I get it. Perhaps to make things easier for the players, what we could do is say allow people to post portrait links for 2 weeks. After the 2 weeks, a ZIP file would be created with all of those portraits included. Players could then download the ZIP with all the portraits, export it to their portraits folder and voila, we have custom portraits for people being client-side only.

How to find the portrait files your char use:
1) Goto local vault sub folder of your NWN installation. NWN places a copy of your char there on creation
2)Open the file of your char. F. E.: Your char is "Lluth-ubh-Llythinn" - open the file "Lluth-ubh-Llythinn.bic" with a text editor. The "Lluth-ubh-Llythinn.txt" file holds your journal by the way.
For some reason the file name may not hold the full name of your char in case of long names and several characters with the same name will result in file names that include a counter: Lluth-ubh-Llythinn1.bic, Lluth-ubh-Llythinn2.bic...
3) The opened file loks very cryptic, but some things appear in plain text. Your name followed by your description followed by your portrait file name. F.E.: ... Lluth-ubh-Llythinn ÿÿÿÿ Asfalon The Red Dragon male_rs_dark_1 nw_cloth013 ...
In this case the portrait file name is male_rs_dark_1
4) Look in your portrait folder for all files that start with the name you found (in this example you should find five files: F.E.:
male_rs_dark_1h.tga
male_rs_dark_1l.tga
male_rs_dark_1m.tga
male_rs_dark_1s.tga
male_rs_dark_1t.tga
The game uses five portraits for different screens. One for the party panel, one for the character sheet and so on...
I do not know which files are used by the screens of the other players, so if you want them to see you, make all five available for them to download.

If you are looking for a portrait, that matches the way you feel your character looks like, I would suggest going to the NWN Vault: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Portraits.List There are literally hundreds, if not at least 1000 choices. You are able to search by Race, Class and Gender, to narrow down the selection, as well as by artist and title.

However, if you choose a portrait from the vault, and post a link to it here, please make sure it is not part of a multi-portrait pack. I am sure most of us do not mind downloading individual portraits of characters we will see on the server. But i doubt anyone will want to have their portrait subdirectory cluttered with unused portraits.

Hi all,

Whilst I was preparing my portraits for submission an idea suddenly struck me. Wouldn't it be a good idea if all our character portraits were posted in the same place rather than all over the place?

We could post everybodies portraits on the NWN VAULTS and it would make life so much simpler. I might be persuded to set this up myself, depending on how large the workload is likely to be. And if your nice to me, I may even provide a custom portrait creation service, as I've become quite adept at making them. But, we'll have to see about that.

Please let me know what you think.

Sorry Eggwood, but I like the idea of a thread, as the one we are in now, that allows people to post links to individual portraits, so that the players can pick and choose which ones they wish to use, rather then have to download multi-portrait packs, when they may not ever see all the characters in game. For example, there are players like Kyle Morgan, that have many different characters, but I have only met a couple of them. It would make no sense for me to download all of them, when I could just select the ones that I come across. This thread is the perfect place for people to give others a link to their portraits, thus giving more diversity to our characters.

many have been talking about what portraits I use and where I have gotten them from. Most are basic though I do have a protraits folder with some 744 portraits consisting of approximately 300 MB. I can make this folder avalable for DL if anyone wishes. Not exactly sure where to put it for DL but perhaps I can submit it to the Vault. Hmm , well there ya go. I'm sorry I really don't like picking files appart to find specific files. I'd just rather give em all to ya. :) SO if anyone wishes there ya go. I'll see what I can do to get then into the vault, or a better location if some one lets me know of one.

Well after looking through my portrait folder I noticed that some of the portraits are duplicates. Like I said b4 I'm not to fond of searching through files. Any way, I may decide to scower through the portraits and remove a few duplicates and a few bad pictures, ie 2 are upsidown. I compressed the file to an RAR and that dropped down the file size to about 124 MB. Tried to upload it to the Vault which seemed to not have worked.. so if anyone still has an idea of how to get this file avalable let me know.

Ok folks, I finally got round to uploading this after a little nudging and reminding from small-print :). You may already have the original in which the ranger's hair is blond, if you want to see Healer as he is imagined I'm afraid yer will haves ter over right it.
