I have been logging into the server for the past few days and went on from the Shire to Bree. I have been awed by the beauty of a few areas (like Green country) and pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of several locations off the beaten track (like Frog Marsh). The effort really shows and the designers did a wonderful job.

The first question: Is there anyway to hire henchmen in UTT? I seem to find combat quite difficult or am I supposed to avoid combat till a certain level (level 3 now)? I think I died about eight times so far and am thinking maybe I missed something. I gave up on Frog Marsh, until I become more proficient in combat, because I think I am missing some required skill and also that every trek in often leads to death.

The second and more important question has to do with quests and maps. Every now and then I restart in the Halls of Waiting with my journal empty and maps of visted areas fogged out. Is there anyway to get those infomation back. It would really suck if such a reset occured in the midst of a long journey or quest.

Hi there engk77, glad your enjoying the world so far.

I'm not going to tell you porkies here - there has been a slight underestimation of the level of challenge required in areas of the shire. Basically, combat there is too hard. I think its overpowering and unfair on new players. I'm committed to addressing this in the expansion we are working on where the balance of combat encounters will be set to the appropriate level. I admire your patience for putting up with so many early deaths! It's quite a game killer for new players though, so I regard this issue as high priority.

As for your second point - im afraid we do not use that level of persistence here. We'd really like to as it would eliminate the need for all manner of elaborate roleplay sequences to explain how a character get from a to b and back to a again! We have no experience with databases and none of us are proficient with them. If we had someone with the knowledge and skill to implement one that is reliable and not game-breaking, we'd consider it.

If you have any further questions, do put them forward :)

Hi engk77, welcome to UTT2.

If you need help with anything, be it a quest, or a guide through some new places, just send a tell to other players. They will at least give a reasonable answer, and at best share some time RPing with your character and helping him in his quest.

To be fair, most Shire quests are non combatent and a couple of the ones that involve fighting are doable at level one depending on the class you are. As a general rule the frog marsh will need a total of three or four levels whether solo or as a party. My general advice is talk to all of the npcs, there are a lot of little quests and errands to run there and its quite possible to make level two without fighting anything much, you just have to look around carefully and explore everywhere.

Frog Marsh is perfectly soloable for a warrior type on lvl3+. A group of characters of any classes of levels 2-3 can generally do it just fine, too - just don't forget to stock on healing supplies (the gold for that is earned on the non-combat quests which are plenty in the Shire).

Another Freelancer defector! Heh

One of the files (merpcep168 ) needed to make the latest nwn patch, our customisations and the cep work together was on a third party site - this site has recently gone offline so im in the process of moving it onto the wireplay ftp.

Rest assured that if this is the missing file, you have all the required games.

I'll be updating the info/downloads/etc thread very soon with the info.

erm... kind of a long the same lines and I too am a relative newb here. Is there anything to do for lvl 5 orcs? or do I need to grind it out until I am recognized by the Marshal at Isengard?

I think your best bet is to befriend some humans and take on the forrachell quests this would see you to lvl 8 nicely. there is little to do for orcs and trolls at your lvl unfortunately but i think this vacuum is being addressed by the powers at be.

True dat. There are some quest gaps even for goodies, but the evil one after Dol Guldur is the most recognizable one. It's best to look out for other parties still doing the quests at Dol Guldur, or already in Isengard and join them.

Hello. I am having a wonderful time in UTT2, but I do have a few questions:
*Where can I get info on how all your interesting items work? I bought a mortar and pestle for healing kits, but I cannot figure out what it does, or what skill (if any) it uses. The same goes for many things, like the Scroll Finder, or Dwarven Barricade Kits. I have tried the Grappler, but that, too, would need more documentation, so that we new players are not stumped. Is there a site/database of this kind of information.
*I see a lot of basic Crafting materials in the world. I hear rumours (on the net) of new crafting systems. Where can I get information as to what I can craft NOW?

Scroll finder - allows you to search an unconscious PC for raise dead scrolls. Thus not using your own when they keep on falling over.

Dwarven Barricade - allows you to make a destructable barricade so you can hide dwarves behind it.. or was it so dwarves can make defensible positions.

Grappler - this tool allows you to climb, however there are many factors involved in the climbing process, such as what armour you are wearing, what you are carrying in your hands if anything at the time. Plus your base Reflex save.

Mortar and Pestle - I believe this only works on healing kits, that actually have a recipe. And that is not all of them I am afraid, so keep trying it and you will get it to work eventually. Again there may be a wisdom / heal check while using it. I am not sure I did not script it in the first place.

The items that can be crafted, one of the best sources, is other players. However with the large number of customisable items soon to be made available, I believe that there are a selection of books that will allow you to learn what you can do.

Where to get those crafting books/recipes ? I've never seen anything like it, be it loot or from a shop.

As far as I know, I have never seen a book regarding crafting. As Dm Curumo says, most knowledge lies within players. However...you can still learn about crafting on your own. It 1) requires skill in either Armor and/or Weaponcrafting. 2) A crafting hammer, which can be purchased at most smithy's. The cost I believe is about 500 gp. With a hammer equipped (or a crafting *club* if you do not have skill in martial weapons), "use" an anvil that should also be found in the smithy. This will display a list of the weapons and armor that you have the skill to create. It will also tell you what components are needed and how much gold is required to craft the item. There are some items that will increase your crafting skill, temporarily, such as gloves. The crafting components are found randomly in drops and loot containers throughout the server.

So no books or recipes. Aye, i got that; i've already figured out how the system works, the word on books got me confused thou... I thought you can obtain some custom recipes for some premium stuff to be crafted.

The books were seen in the new expansion, Kev showed us. So I would expect something in the new expansion.
