View Full Version : Balin's Remnant

The premise:

Nearly two decades before the present, the heroic warrior, Balin — second in command under Thorin at the Battle of Five Armies and illustrious commander thereafter — led a company of dwarves on a desperate mission to the depths of Khazad-dum to fight back the orcish hordes that had overtaken it and reclaim the Great Halls of Durin from the darkness under which it had fallen. Superior strength and unfailing courage led to early victories, and Balin ruled there as Uzbad Khazaddumu, “Lord of Moria,” for five triumphant years. It wasn’t until orcs returned with overwhelming force to engage Balin’s company at the Battle of Dimril Dale that Balin and his dwarves met their tragic end.

But not all. Unknown to the history books, a single fighting unit was delayed on its way to battle — so that the devout of Aule among them might gather blessed weapons from a separate storeroom — and that diversion ultimately spared them from their demise. But it sentenced them instead to these many years trapped inside Moria — with all hope of escape blocked by overwhelming opposition. Now, each day for “Balin’s Remnant” is a battle for survival amidst the harshest enemy occupation. One wrong step would mean their discovery and annihilation. And yet, their abiding sense of honour requires that they seize what opportunities they might to carry on their tenuous guerilla resistance.

The opportunity:

I’m looking for players who would be willing to commit to play characters on a near-weekly basis in an ongoing series of DM-sponsored events that chronicle the struggles for survival of this (hypothetical) company of dwarves trapped within Moria — a desperate remnant of Balin’s glorious, but all-too-short-lived, return.

We’ll roll up characters to be used exclusively for these events — you’ll NOT have the latitude to use them outside these events, nor to develop them independently of these events. I'd like to start everyone at level 10 or 11 (determined by a roll of the dice), and your options for classes will be sorely limited — you must choose from base classes of fighter, cleric, or paladin, with the additional option to take levels of dwarven defender if you meet its requirements. You will be supplied from Balin's own fine armoury, and while some items may be in short supply, you'll have full latitude to put items as appropriate in the hands of those of you most capable to use them.

With each event (held at a weekend time TBD by consensus), you’ll be faced with a unique challenge — an enemy threat to be dispatched, an ancient relic to be recovered, critical supplies to be gathered, evidence of other survivors to be explored — and 90 minutes to complete it.

I expect it to be an interesting experiment in roleplaying — with a fun balance of strategy and tactics and of character development and battle-frenzy. I expect to lay some early groundwork over the next week, giving folks opportunities to settle in with the upgrade to v1.69, but soon thereafter I’ll want to start scheduling actual event dates and times.

But the very first order of business? I’d like to assess interest in this rather unusual formula. Would those who have an interest and likelihood to participate please respond below, or to me by PM or e-mail (dm.vaire@gmail.com)?

Thanks!

I'd say this is an excellent idea and could lead to a lot of fun. I really like the concept (though you'd just know that the dwarves are doomed - there were no survivors of Balin's attempts to recapture Moria). My only problem is a personal one; I'm allergic to dwarves. I've tried playing one, and have played alongside many, and I just don't like them. Sorry!

Otherwise, excellent idea and I'd be really glad to see it a success.

I am considering this thouroughly. The idea strikes me, aswell the setting.
While not long ago, I stated firmly, that two characters are more then enough, this might lead to #5 after all :)

I think this is a superb idea (funnily enough) and would be very interested in joining in myself. The only downside for me is the need to work the occasional weekend - although generally only on one day. So depending on time (I will only ever be working a 0900 - 1700 British Time) I would be up for this. Having said that it would also depend on when it's due to start - it's my fiance's birthday this weekend, our annual festival the following one, then a wedding - so it may be that I have to miss out this time around. I will follow what happens closely though.

Sounds great! Thanks Vairė. I would like to participate but will be away for two weeks after this weekend.

Thanks to everyone who has shown support for this idea — I’d hoped for at least four or five regulars, and it seems that we’ll muster that once folks have sorted some very near-term commitments.

What I might recommend we do is let the upgrade proceed this week (fingers are crossed), then by next weekend start leveling and equipping characters — a process that'll continue through the end of the month. The weekend of the 30th and 31st I’ll post up maps to Khazad-Dum which your company should find useful, including certain passageways and supply stations that are only available to those engaged in these events. I’ll also, at that point, flesh out additional backstory that outlines the milestones that have gotten your group from Balin’s defeat to the present.

We’ll then figure to launch our first official 90-minute challenge to be undertaken the weekend of September 6 or 7.

I’m certainly looking forward to hosting such brave dwarven warriors in such a sore trial of their fortitude. TSP rightly hints at the dimness of their prospects, but I think all those participating will find the conclusion we arrive at in due course to be extraordinarily satisfying nonetheless.

Watch this thread for further details soon!

I've made a Paladin (meant to become Pal/DD):
Kebur Ironfee

A long life in service as a Lordprotector has given this dwarf a friendly and wise but authoritatively demeanor.
Tall for a dwarf his sweeping glance seems to see through more than ordinary disguises and his commanding presence in conjunction with his deep voice can stop many threats before leading to a fight.

Would still love to participate in this when the aliens return DM_Vaire. *Looks up to the skies for signs of returning flying saucers*
