View Full Version : Reasons for resigning - the truth! :)

As many know, myself and Badboy resigned as co-club captains of Actua Soccer 2/3 this weekend, but I feel it would be best to set the record straight on our reasons for doing so.

The perceived lack of support from Wireplay was certainly a supporting factor, but was by no means the main reason. I have a lot of time for James (Uprising) and his team (Mr Vista, Mohawk, Oscar etc) and they have been nothing but courteous to me on the many occasions I have met/spoken with them. James particularly, in my opinion, gets a bit of undeserved flak from time to time, but he knows he's the front-line guy and he takes it on the chin in good spirit. Our problem was that unless we chased them, hassled them if you like, the amount of time it took to get our reports posted, prizes destributed, updates posted etc. was wholly unreasonable. Badboy particularly felt aggreived about this , but we know how busy the guys are. Like I say, a pain, but not the be all and end all of our reasons for quitting.

Our main reason was the fact that it had become a rather "thankless task" as CC's. We had to endure week after week of abuse, ill-manners, petty sniping and even cheating from a number of immature idiots who clearly lack in the personality/manners department. Whilst this is a minority, the majority rarely offered a "thanks" for the time and effort we put in and tended to moan more than contribute. Ironically, when we did resign, many were apologetic, but too little too late I'm afraid. I doubt many gamers realised how little we were "paid" for a job that took up considerably more time, effort AND money than we were reimbursed for. It simply became unenjoyable.

We also wanted more powers to control the idiots, but this was not available to us.

Another reason was the poor standard of AS3 that we were ready to act as CC's for as AS2 declined in popularity. It seems both WP and Gremlin gave little thought to how the game would be playable over WP, and the plethora of options that are able to be chosen pre-game meant that the cheats and whiners would have a field day - ie - its technically an "un-tourneyable" game! The thought of the arguments and whinging we would encounter with it, not withstanding the cheating, put the seal on it. Also, the game is bloody awful in our opinion - it "looks good" but is as realistic as Cha5 never moaning again is. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Finally, we both have busy schedules work wise and we both realised that we would struggle to put in the time necessary to make it all gel together.

So, there you have it - it wasn't all Wireplay's fault, despite many thinking that.

I will continue to knock around and play a few games as before and I have high hopes for the system long term. I sincerely hope it all works, for everyone.

Merry Xmas to you all, and a prosperous and lag-free New Year. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Keith - just to say thanks for your kind words about us. I would just like to say to anyone who reads this that Keith(Rocky) and I spoke on the phone for a considerable amount of time, and I am using all his pleas, especially those relating to nuicanse players as part of our comprehensive plans to help Captains.

James, I am pleased you are finally acting on his comments, they are mainly the same complaints a lot of us have had for a long time. If you are now finally sorting them out, good.
Trying to get the punters to realise what a time consuming and difficult task being a CC is is probably impossible but at least you admit that they havent been getting the support from WP they should have. If you really are sorting this out, and need some one to run any strategy type clubs, drop me an email http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Any ways, as you seem to be finally addressing the issues we all care about, well done to you, I know you are quite "rabid" when you sink your teeth in (thats a compliment BTW).
Heres looking forward to the new year and all it brings. Take care.

Me????Moan???? I don't know what your talking about. Whilst i'm here I have a serious problem with...............and if it aint sorted out .........................

Seriously, its a damn shame when two Club Captains, who have been doing a great job have been forced, by a combination of reasons, to stand down.

It was with their encouragement and offers of support that I decided to apply for a Captaincy myself (now you know who to blame http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif)

I only hope that we see Rocky and Badboy back again soon running a different club.

Thanks for all you have done in the past, and I look forward to continuing to lose to you two in the future, whatever game it may be.

Erm not sure if I understand you there Siefly, to me, WP is and always has been very important. I have made too many friends to mention, in fact I am staying wit h2 of em over new year all the way over in Manchester <shudder>, where I will meet up with at leat 8 other WPers that will turn up. I have a few passons, Hull City (dont, I already know http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif), my kids, wargaming, beer and online gaming. To me, WP was (and seems to be getting back there) the most brilliant idea ever, good speeds and communities with a wide range of supported games plus some excellent free ones. When I was a CC, I had a brill time, sure there was the odd moaner and hassle but ultimately everyone else seemed to appreciate what we were doing. Apart from WP. They (James and Oscar) have both acknowleged that they have made mistakes over this, and have promised to put it all right. I believe them this time, mainly because despite the odd http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif person like me telling what was wrong, I dont think they believed me. Now with these boards, I think they appreciate the full strength of the mainstreams opinions and have been a little sh****ed by it all. To lose one captain is unfotunate, but to lose at least 4 is well, you know the rest.
I look forward to a time of healing, and getting together and making things better again. Of getting what we have already working better, and adding more new stuff. This will take time, but I am sure it will be achieved, if we ALL work together. As well as all the above, I would also like to see me in a captains position again, doing what I do best. Organising and helping out, and feeding WP info to improve stuff http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif As Mechcommander is unlikely to be on, when you realise about Nit, I offer my services to Populous James http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gifhehe what balls eh?
All that remains to say is, keep up the good work WP, you are starting to do thegreat job you started doing a year ago, and I for one am looking to 1999 with relish. Cya all online.

Oh and a vote for Hog for "most Helpfull geezer/chick is a vote for common sense LOL. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Well I think I should get the vote - cause I'm probably the newest WirePlayer on this thread so far and feel I've brought the whole service a breath of fresh air http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Rocky - thanks for explaining your position m8 - we now have no ammo against WirePlay http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif Seriously though - I know a lot of people will be sorry to see you go... And I'm sorry that I never got good enough at AS2 to enter a tourny... (I played as Brazil vs Faroe Islands for 3 hours once and only scored 1 goal http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/redface.gif)...

Uprising - I think we are all looking forward to a very positive 1999 - if all of your strategies work out WirePlay will be as good as Hogs recollections http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif Btw - without knowing this NIT bloke - if he is found to be unsuitable I'm sure Hog would be a very popular returning captain... And at least all his threads wouldn't have to start with "In my day..." and "When I was a captain..."... Hahahahahaha (sorry m8 http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif couldn't resist)...

Oh - one last thing - Rocky m8 - your resignation wasn't in anyway connected to this Peter Mandelson thing was it???

http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif Rocky and Mandy eh? Hmm, there was mention of a park, I think, and dont you play footy on a park? LOL
Siefly- I have been on WP, as you know http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif and I been playing all sorts, I am just not going on as Hog (I find too many people want my HELP and advice, so for a break, I decided to be anon).
Velvet-Breath of what? I reckon you need some mouth wash m8y http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif And less of the reminicing from me, young whipper snapper you.
Everyone else (all those I have helped, all those I have yet to help...) be cool, have a nice xmas and anyone know why I cant get red alert working anymore???

First off, thanks for the kind words about my/our departure from the Captain's scene. I will be honest though, the Samaritans have been more than helpful and I think I'm over the worst now. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

(*twitch* <withdrawal symptoms again> )

Like Siefly and his excellent Poker club, I believe we ran a pretty succesful club during our tenure, considering AS2's appeal in relation to the Quakes, Dukes and Air Attacks. We had twice weekly tournaments with participant levels ranging from 14 to 28, averaging about 20 over the six months. I doubt we could have squeezed a lot more interest out of it if we had tried, so we leave relatively pleased with our efforts.

I think James has listened very well over the months and he knows my position only too well as regards the best way forward for Wireplay. As Hog says, I agree and honestly believe 1999 will prove a year of positive change, especially now many of the gripes have finally been taken on board to be acted upon.

I am sure that if AS3 hadn't been such an awful game, I might still be pressing on with things, despite the problems I outlined in my original post in this thread. The changes James has indicated will take place shortly should, more or less, overcome those issues I have - hopefully.

If a decent footy game ever appears on Wireplay, I am sure me and/or Badboy might want to take part again, subject to the necessary improvements being made. We had good times too, many of them, especially as we both met each other as original trialists of the Wireplay system back in 1996. Despite being 500 miles apart, we have since met (along with others) on several occasions and built up a good friendship as a result. Even my wife likes him - amazing. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif Wireplay has proved to be a great tool for making friends and meeting new people, let alone the gaming aspect, and long may this continue. This is why the Community Spirit is the most fundamental issue Wireplay should enhance, excepting perhaps performance of the system.

Velvet mate - As for my client "Pete" Mandelson, yes, I am aware of his financial difficulties. Unfortunately for him, I hear he underestimated the price of rent-boys in Notting Hill, hence his dilemma. Pity, he's had to cease his pension contributions now which has adversely impacted upon my 1999 revenue targets http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Me and the missus are off on our hols on sunday, so I will wish you all a very merry Xmas and see you online very soon. Thanks again.

Cheers all.

Dear all -I hope we are now showing we are committed, we always were but obviously weren't doing enough. I'm still reeling from seeing Hog posting nice comments, so I now see it as my job to keep them coming! On a more serious note we're all fired up for next year and I'm more determined than ever to prove that I'm gonna do what I say. I'm beginning to feel a bit like a politician, the intention is there but it never seems to happen. Well that's all gonna change from when I get back on Jan 4. Myslef, and Oscar will however be trawling these boards between now and then and will try to do it daily.

James, I am hurt, I have said nice stuff in the past, and in the recent past. The prob is no one else seemed willing to voice their discontent, just me, which wasnt giving you a real over view of the situation. By becoming a target for abuse from certain individuals on these boards, it now seems that more people have been willing to be honest, in the open, with you and the rest of us, and I reckon thats great. Its always easier to moan but not to complain I reckon, its very british. So after all the grievances have now been aired, you know where you stand, and what you need to do, so we all benefit which is of course great. You gotta admit at one point, it must have seemed that it was "just Hog having a moan again" but everyting I have complained about, or critised has been brought up again by others, plus you are now doing something about it all, which makes me very happy. I will always give praise where its due, but rest on any laurels and me and Velvet will hunt you down.....<evil laff> http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif
Whats going on with the populous club? Its been running for a month now and still nothing. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

Rocky, Badboy - its a great shame to see you go over Actua Soccer. I'm particularly sorry about the fact that you weren't pleased with the performance of the game.

Am I right in thinking that the key problem is the use of Cheats in the game not being controlable by the organisers. I'll ask Gremlin if they can help us out here - you never know they might be willing to provide us with a special patch or something.

In the meantime we'll keep our eyes out for games which will attract you guys back to the Club Captain fold - it would be a shame to lose you guys for long.

p.s. Thanks for the demotion :-) (I'm the marketing boss - I don't mind, I could do with passing the internal politics to James - but I fear he'd not want it either :-()

Hi Oscar,

Your right in what you say about the cheats although it needn't be controlled by the organiser as long as say the proposer's settings affected all in the game (i.e. a level playing field - pardon the pun http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif )
The game also isnt realistic, every shot is a 100mph thunderbolt. There are other things but I won't bore you to death http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif In our opinion Gremlin have actually gone backwards with this game.

While I'm on, I would just like to say to everyone else that what Rocky said is spot on and although we had problems with idiots, we also had a lot of help from the Wireplay team and great guys like CHA5, SIEFLY and BROON while we were online.

Have a great Xmas everyone

Oscar,

Many thanks for the kind words and my apologies for the unintentional demotion! James has always told me he was *your* boss you see, so I'm innocent. (only kidding http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif)

As both Badboy and I have said, we have been on Wireplay since it's inception and wish to continue to participate where we can as we believe in it and enjoy using it. Please do keep us in mind should suitable games arise in the future. In the meantime we'll carry on enjoying a few games and feedback to you where we think we can be of assistance, nice guys that we are etc http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/wink.gif

You and the rest of the WP team are a great bunch of guys and I certainly hope we can meet again in the near future. Perhaps you can run EX-Club Captain meetings in parallel to the official ones? Any excuse for a free beer http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Happy New Year in advance, I'm now (literally) off to Heathrow to fly to where it's warmer.

Cya all in a fortnight. Have a good one.

Hi Folks,

I disagree that Actua Soccer 3 is a poor game, the graphics are good, gameplay is better than AS2, there's thousands of teams to choose from in its database, also the game runs very smooth on Wireplay. Ok so it may not be as good as Fifa 99 but I count that out as it aint on Wireplay.

Bye folks
