Hi, i am a new member, but have played quake for a while, and have noticed that over the past couple of months Quake 1 servers have been on the decline.
this may be because of the new games: Counter Strike etc...

so what i propose is that we all pull togeather and get lots more people to design.. Maps, skins, Mods (new ones) and more servers are needed.

    POST YOUR SUGGESTIONS BELOW PLEASE...

Not sure if this would work or if there is already a mod like this.

Some sort of auto teamplay server setup like the way UT does teamplay games. (and other games i dunno)

    - map cycle of popular TP maps (maybe an option vote for map change)
    - People may join half way through a game
    - But the server auto sets the team the player joins (to the losing side?)
    - At the end of the game, the map changes and server tries to adjust the teams fairly given the results of the previous game
    - sort 10 min games or a score limit

It would not leave much room for tactics. But it does mean u can just jump into a server and play, without having to wait for a game to finnish or trying to sort map and teams etc.

Not that I would have a clue on how to code it.

    What do others think? heh

i think that you wouldn`t be able to find anyone who could be bothered to do it.... witness the current "reinc" map affair.... Told Spar that he would be very lucky to see them up EVER let alone in time for this wpffa- so far i seem to be vindicated..... i would hold the same to be true for new mods, particulary so for such a major revision....(instagib was slightly diferent `cos it was already there and was easy to get up and runnin).
Soooooo you want to keep QW going? Play on wireplay servers several times a week.. use this board, join a clan, play teamies, join the WPFFA league, etc......QW has survived this long partly because it IS a great game but partly because the social scene is the best online i`ve found.....
and long may it remain so!

... i have told amok a fair few times but he naturally has a few more things on his mind than adding a few maps to a game server, such as worrying about his future with wireplay and what he should do if the worst comes to the worst.

but i shall now go email him some more

demon servers for team fortress hold 32 players and last nite they were full.full with players who used to play only on wireplay till christmas before last when wireplay passworded the openplay tf servers and kicked us out.even if only a quarter of these players dropped in ,onto the deathmatch servers for some duel practice it would double the amount thats in there now.
the tf community didnt leave wireplay .it was kicked out for no reason.reopen tf2 server for open play and u may end up wiht more people deathmatchin.
it aint asif you dont have the servers.just close one of the many dm ones that are never used.
lets face it,,there aint gonna be an influx of new players.half the people buying a new comp today think quake 3 is the only quake there is.

dirk: that would make sense, had it not been one of the few nights that people were playing TF. I should know, some of my clan were aliasing in that game

There's plenty of net TF servers, and it's not much a stretch to ask Veng (a WPer) for the IP now is it?

i will soon be posting up a LONG list of servers with
Q Plug (stats) on them so it is easier.

Thanks again to all of you for supporting us..

kewel- if Wireplay goes tits up then i think i would have to look for new servers- i find barrysworld generally poor (ping and pl look fine but feel it feels like zimmer quake)
If you have a mega speedy cable modem you could always put your own pc noline as a server with all the mods/skins/ maps you like..... coming to think of it- you could use an old 2nd hand p200 for that and use your main pc for everything else......yes, a shared conection..... that would be good.. anyone fancy having a go?

I totally agree with u blitto about barrysworld, but if wireplay does go tits up, then they will have 2 auction off their servers etc..

i can tell you that i will then setup online gaming... should be good fun.

I am still making a list of mods etc.. which could be made..

    Thanks

Barrysworld servers suck? Well **** me, try running servers off a cable modem, see how great they are...

I can probably get one or two running, on a decent connect (100mbit). There'll be servers, don't worry about that...

As for mods, hmm, do you have any idea how much coding goes into a decent QW mod? Or how much work goes into making _decent_ skins, or maps worth playing (especially mod maps)? We're talking a hell of a lot of work for just one mod, and in case you hadn't noted there's very few people left playing QW.

How many of those do you think are quality coders/mappers/skinners?

Sorry to put such a downer on it, it's a nice idea but heh! You just have to look at halflife and quake3 to see any number of mods done by obviously talented people that are a complete waste of time...

actually, quakec coding is remarkably simple.
a mod like the one x-cell was talking about could be easily achieved in under 2 weeks.

is this some kind of windup? Looks like something Harry Lagman would have written

after my GCSEs i will b setting up a server on a 500k line, with whatever maps u want...

it should be fun, and all i can say, is that although there have been many attempts to recruit new players to revive Quake 1, i think this campaign coul work (fingers crossed)

well if you have any ideas i would like to hear them so post them belowa and i am sure someone will get back to you.

Thanks again for all the support!!

Metalhead: Making a mod that people will want to play takes a great deal of time, teamwork, dedication, no small amount of skill, and excellent management.

    Jaymetz: 500k line?

You have to be kidding me.

2 meg is the _minimum_ for a decent server, and I mean minimum...

yes, but i was refering to the kind of serverish mod that x-cell was talking about, not something full-scale like a total conversion.
