    Guide to IRC

Did you know Lothlorien has an IRC channel?

    What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat. IRC is a multi-user chat system, where people meet on "channels" (rooms, virtual places, usually with a certain topic of conversation) to talk in groups, or privately. There is no restriction to the number of people that can participate in a given discussion, or the number of channels that can be formed on IRC.

How go I get to the Lothlorien IRC channel?
First, you have to make sure an IRC client is installed on your system. If you do not have one you should ask your local system admin to install a client on your PC or local area network. If you have a stand-alone PC with internet access you have to obtain and install a client yourself.

You can download a client from the following URL: http://www.mirc.com/get.html

Why would I want to join the IRC channel?
The channel has many Lothlorien users:- players, GM, Admin, game pros and Wireplay staff. This means you can get all the help you want in game from all these users. You can use it to talk trade and ask for help, although you must abide by the rules which is generally common sense. (Admins and GMs are recognised by the @ in front of their name, not all people use their in game name in IRC)

How do you connect to it?
Once you have mIRC installed you can either click on the IRC link on the contact page which looks like this: irc.quakenet.org #wp.uo. This will connect you to the correct channel and server.

Alternatively you can use the options to automatically connect to the server, which is called Quakenet, and then simply type "/j #wp.uo" or "/join #wp.uo".

CAUTION: Don't accept file transfers, or open webpages from anyone you don't know or trust. It is possible that the file or webpage could contain a virus that may harm your computer.

I have to do this every time I want to join the IRC channel?
You can add this channel to your favourites like web pages. To do this simply click on the favourites option at the top. There will also be a tick box for "Join on connect". This will join the channel automatically when you connect to the server.

Who do I speak to if I need help?
If you need any help with IRC, ssmmdd is a Wireplay IRC guy,
If you have a problem with Wireplay, DM_Kev is the guy you want.

And a final thing for Jock:
IRCd is the type of server in which the clients connect to.
mIRC one of the clients that can connect to an IRCd.

Once you have installed the mIRC client (http://www.mirc.com), click this link irc://irc.quakenet.org/wp.uo. This will automatically open mIRC, connect to the IRC server, and join the Lothlorien channel.

    See you there.
