    A Dying Shard?

What is going on with the player count lately?

A few weeks back it was an average of around 50 - 60 but yesterday night it was 6:30pm GMT and the count was 30. Maybe it was an off time but i mean 30 players? For a commercial shard with financial backing such as Wireplay that should be minimum of 50. We need to pick things up and make lorien more appealing?

If you want more players, do something about it. The staff obviosly is not concerned with low player base...so yeah...

Player count at this time during high school and college exam week is expected to be down.....its the same every year.....once exams are over, the count will be back up.....

The summer will also bring the count up because players will have more free time to play.....

or other taming what we have makes some items (sets from dragons - green or red - or wyrm) dificult to get (PKs or other tamer may kill u to get them cus to tame stupid dragon u need 129 sec.... before u will start to tame u must use piacemaking - if u dont have luck like me u will do it.... and do it.... - and when u will at last start to tame someone will disturb u)

in my opinion also some skills (no necro - i looked many shards sites and many of them who was popular haved necro skill), or items f.e. colored ones (from ores)... and many other things...

If you are having trouble taming the dragons with peacemaking......get creative.....there are other ways to tame a dragon without peacemaking.....although few on this shard are even willing to try....i've offered some help...no one seems to want any.... if you are a gm tamer and want an easy dragon tame.....see me ingame.....

back to topic of this thread.....

I don't know if players are leaving to go to other shards or not.....some players may be just trying to balance their relationship with their girlfriend or wife....( I know my wife hates this game with a passion!!) Players often "take a break" for real life.....

but I have not been here as long as many of you, so I am not the best to judge the question.....so i just give my opinion.....

This shard has a higher player base than the one i came from....so i'm happy.

    "This isn't that bad"

This is the worst I have ever seen the shard. If the staff won't do anything, then us players should take it upon ourselves to.

Any creative ideas that players can do to increase population?

Well NuDeFoRuM, taming needs to be fixed, rides need to be spawned, more events need to be done, some new cool scripts need to be made etc. not much players can do

there are plenty of events that players can do if they really want events (there are ways for players to run pvp events, pvm events, treasure hunts, etc.) The reason the staff dont do them is because of the players, quite frankly i dont see why i should give up my time to run an event just to hear at the end 'OMFG that is unfair' 'your events suck', etc when there are more important things i could be doing for the shard.
NuDeFoRuM you seem to want to blame it all on the staff, the reason loth has such a high staff turnover and why so many of the staff end up with low moral is because the players treat them like dirt.
If you expect to have staff that are motivated they need a reason to be, getting abused by players makes staff less willing to help.

Oh and don't be so sure on staff having the right attitude. I paged about my gender swap changing in an event and wanted it back, I thought the stone would change it back. Nitty then answered it with " you shouldn't of entered the event if you were going to die", becuase that is funny and is the right attitude, I think not.

One thing I believe works is voting for the shard, cus if people see Wireplay Lothlorien at high place of the list, will think "oh, that must be a good shard, I should check it out"
Not a very efective one, i agree, but it's something every player should do, it's easy and doesn't take much time.

P.S.: this is not a solution, ok? it's just something that helps a little

Voting would definately help. But how can we as players try to encourage this...?

Are you seeing some type of financial backing that I haven't seen? We are sponsored and hosted by Pipex, that's all. Whenever something "financial" has come into play regarding the shard, it has been from my own pocket.

It's silly to say loth is a dying shard and even if it was, we will never reach 0 client count. Some big changes are happening and once a few details are nailed out, loth will resume progress at the speed I once had it.

It's never as bad as it seems, I assure you.

I totally understand you. But honestly, that has a very simple solution.

    "your events suck"
    *jail*
"hey you can't jail me for that"
"i can't? how'd you like some skill reduction as well?"
    "ok, ok i'm sorry"

In other words, punish people who act like that. I personally loath going to an event and see everyone at the end going "HEY GIVE ME TICKETS!". Just punish those people, it's as simple as that.

    I disagree absolutly entirely. Infact I'm morally against it. NEVER. EVER. Jail people for having their own opinion. ITS NOT AGAINST THE RULES, and jailing someone for having an opinion which upsets you will;
    a) upset them, and or provke them more
    b) result in a completely unessisary complaint
    c) be a waste of all your times
    d) you'll be abusing your power

NEVER DO THAT. When I was staff I was proud of the fact that I only ever had to deal with one incident in an event, where someone was swearing at me because they lost in MvM - in which case I calmly said something along the lines of 'Look - I've tried my best to make this fair, the monsters had the same HP, DEX and INT, and if you still think i rigged it, im sorry. If it upsets you that much, dont bother entering next time and putting yourself through it again.' and sent them to a town.

You never need to do that. Simply win the respect of players and be kind and treat them as equals and they'll never say things like that. If they do, speak to them in private and tell them that it upsets you.

What you fail to see elwood is that most people who do that kind of stuff are 10 year old, with whom that technic you described doesn't work.

Besides how is that abusing power? If a GM is using his GM account to say benifict his player char, that's abusing power. How would he be abusing power by jailing someone who's being disruptive?

Also, you say that it would "provoking them more". Ah, but you see, they weren't ever provoked to begin with. People who have that kind of behavior are the kind of people that are so self-centered that can see nothing other than their own nose. For them I say "oh you THINK I'm being unfair? Let's see how you'd like some actual unfairness. I'm going to give you some reason to complaint". I'm sure they wouldn't complain next event about not being given tickets.

But it must be bad if it drives the gms not to hold events, so their must of been quite a bit of complaining going on. I mean the gm is giving up their free time to hold an event to benefit the players not themselves and so should be thanked and, I, on most occasions do thank the person that held the event. However I do admit to complaining sometimes when I get frustrated but I do not go over board.

i have nothing against people who decide to complain reasonably (point out errors/bugs in it, etc) the main problem is that its people who run around spamming in caps that really just wind me up. Plus people who decide its ok to try and pvp right after the event, normally i have to make sure that atleast 2 other staff are online at the time so that (for example in a TDM) they can go through ahead to watch for pvp while i wait for everyone to leave.
It's too much hastle tbh just to get abuse from players at the end.

What you fail to see is that i was a GM and this acctually worked. I've seen countless people try to use your method, and it brings more trouble than simply shrugging off the comment in question.

You've got to remeber its a game - at the end of the day the most important thing is that people take the time to play - so in that regards the GM's need the players far more than the players need the GM's. Thats why a GM jailing someone for expressing a different view to them - i.e. the event sucked is both a deterant for players, and an abuse of power. Remeber - without Players there would be no GM's.

Thats why if a player complains, you should listen to what they say - the staff moaning isnt the best medium for a fun game. The event is only as good as you make it. Your a god damn entertainer - make everyone have fun.

On more topical stuff though, the way to improve the player count is to introduce more fun into the shard - even stupid stuff like community building activities, where the staff just socialise with the players for no reason. However, as UO is getting older and older, its going to get harder and harder to claw those players back.

edit: I agree with Sully though that the shard will probebly never die. Its been supposedly dying for the last 2 and a bit years.

i dont think loth is dying its just find it a little boring... more magical weapons (like magic rings) example: broadsword of might +2 tactics or +5 str...more things to find means more things to do.

I'm not talking about people expressing different view points, I'm talking about people spamming "this event sucks give me tickets". That pisses *ME* off and I'm not even the one running the event, so I understand why pilz-e gets frustrated because of it.
