Can't you use a revert patch to go back to v1.66?

The past 2 nights NWN has been crashing. I had a L2 charcater who left bree on the east road but NWN kept crashing when loading. I started a new L1 char which was OK walking around bree but crashed at the same point.
I am running V 66 of NWN, same thing happens with the Firewall turned off.
The game worked OK for a week but not now.
Try turning your shiny water visual effect off - this is a problem that people with some video cards have - once this is turned off the problem seems to be solved.

Well seeing as how that is one of the areas with a custom tileset it would seem logical to assume its related to that somehow...
Is this the first you've tried to leave Bree? Or the first time you've left by that particular exit? Have you downloaded all the required tilesets? Have you tried reinstalling them?
Okay never mind that I was clutching, Ghost seems to know what he's on about(most of the time
)
Thanks for that, I turned off the shiny water visual effect and it worked OK.
For the record I have an NVidea 9550
Cheers

Quite certain that i am writing of some obvious stuff in a wrong place. But who dares wins.
Prob is the whirlwind. It surely is a general issue, but nevertheless. Sometimes it just freezes you and only way to free yourself is to change weapon.
Dont think nothing can be done to that, but it still baffles me. So broken its actually a very hasardous to your health.
This is indeed a known NWN bug. One way around it is to have two identical weapons, put them into quickbar slots, and switch between them after every whirlwind attempt.
I've just tried about 20 attempts to change the appearence of a weapon and failed every time. So I relogged a character that could afford it and tried again finding that I couldn't change the appearence of a DC7 garment with a craft armour of 10, I tried several times. The craft dialogue no longer even seems to make the roll, so I can only assume that a chunk of it is missing since we updated. Can anyone shed some light on this, or are we all consigned to looking the same again? *sighs*
*whacks him/her on the head with a newspaper* I told you a thousand times! The skill rolls that are tied to dialogues are completely bugged. This is caused by some Linux incompatibility with the patch.

But the _server_ does, dummy.

Yes, misterroboto2 is quite correct. It is a bug effecting all Linux servers (some more than others depending on their custom content/scripts)
If you want the technical answer any call to the script function GetIsSkillSuccessful() will fail. Basically any script that does a skill roll against a DC that is not a "game feature". Hide/Spot will work as normal, Taunt and Parry will work fine, but, for example, a Lore check against the Moria door (or, CEP crafting as Mhyradin raised) will aways fail.
(It is not actually tied to dialogues technically, its just that most (all?) of our skill check rolls are in fact called through a dialogue interface.)
There are three main ways to fix it, two via scripting - a short, potentially dangerous way and a long, safer way. The third way involves a third party (i.e. not Bioware) binary patch to the server install.
We are giving Bioware a few days to come up with a patch to the patch, but if nothing is forthcoming we will probably attempt to "fix" it (more a workaround really).
Again, sorry for the inconvenience, but beyond our control unfortunately. Please bear with us.

Thank you for your informative, helpful and perhaps most importantly, NOT PATRONISING response.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Bioware patches Neverwinter Nights so that they have to... patch it again..?
You know, Neverwinter Nights II is going to be 15x buggier than the original game. Oblivion has likes to screw good games up, like what they did with Knights of the Old Republic II.
You're welcome.Originally Posted by Mhyradin

The skill check issue with the new patch was mentioned in the thread regarding the update.

As Aiwendil says we are holding our breaths for a few days in the hope that Bioware comes up with a fix. But failing that we may have to stretch ourselves and do something "technical"
*shudders*.
I believe that Atari has also announced that they will no longer be supporting NWN1. So there may in fact be no fix forthcoming from the developers... unless the community really lays a guilt trip on them![]()

Do call it valiant fury:
From what I understand, the current situation means that there will be no more patches after 1.68, and that one won't have any major new content, mostly bugfixes. But we will still get it, at least.I believe that Atari has also announced that they will no longer be supporting NWN1. So there may in fact be no fix forthcoming from the developers...
That's somthing I guess.
As long as the current problem is fixed I am happy.

Inevitable that they would be stopping new patches soon. Says a lot about the popularity of NWN that they have thought it appropriate to support it thus far especially as they have no father financial gain from it. They tried to milk it a little more with the "official" mods but I think that experiment failed.
Like Ghost I will be happy if the final patch sorts out the outstanding bugs even if devoid of other content. I certainly feel I have got my moneys worth, and a lot more (community Mods I have downloaded and the servers I have played on)..
It's a bottomless pit Sir!
Aren't all pits bottomless lad?
Slightly off topic but I must say the Neverwinter Nights series has without a doubt proved to be the best value for money game I have ever bought.
It was the first thing I installed on my (then) new machine in October 2003, two and a half years later I still play it on a semi-regular basis, or at least as and when I can. Two and a half years play isn't bad for an output of less than £80 really.
I think one of the things that has given it this long life is the toolset (and the ability to make your own mods/worlds) and the free online play. Despite the massive growth in popularity of MMORPGS Neverwinter is still played regularly.
And now back to the bugs!

I wholeheartedly agree, ghost.
