Why has everyone deserted the best console?
I hate all this 'not enough games' and 'kids console' rubbish. In my experience, little kids all want Pl*ystations. Also, they play games like GTA and Resi ('Suitable for young adults'). Games like Banjo and Mario are often more appealing to the older gamer with an attention span over 5 minutes long. The Dreamcast is also rank. Anyway, here's my top 10, in no particular order (games which are out only):- Zelda (Ocarina) Mario F-Zero X Banjo-Kazooie ISS 98 Goldeneye 1080 Diddy Kong Mariokart Body Harvest ------------------ Every power is perceived or created by the mind, therefore the mind is the greatest power of all. |

F-Zero X? Diddy Kong?
WHY??? F-Zero was fun for a bit, but talk about a total disapointment same for Diddy!! I thought that F-Zero was going to be one of the greats but I really was upset at the final out come. The Wipeout Saga are more fun and playable even though its origins lay in F-Zero. I shall have to think more about the games that shall be best rembered by me. But it is hard to say whether some of these new release games will really live up to their promises, remeber Yoshi's Island 2? Another game that promised alot but really failed to deliver. I really hope they do though ![]() Maybe: Pilot Wings Mario 64 Mario Kart Star Fox Goldeneye Wave Race Zelda Then Maybe (if all goes well) Perfect Dark Conker Resident Evil Zero The fading light of the N64 may well become bright, well I hope so ![]()

OMG be ashamed! Wipeout is not even in the same league as F-zero X! Wipeout I feel has some of the worst control system out there and also even without weopons F-zero X is still more fun in multiplayer than Wipeout!
I was glad to see Wipeout 3 flop as that is what it truly deserves! |

The only people who I know who complain about the control system of Wipeout are the ones who cannot play the game! and thus kvetch about how it is too hard to use and they only seem to crash into every corner!
The game has an excellent, interactive control system that has a superb learning curve. I was working in a games out let when the original was released and you want to know the amout of lamo's who came back with the game complaining of the controls! The system was altered for the following games making the craft easier to handle and less likely to stop dead on hitting the side. This only made the game easier so more speed was added to supliment this but it did not make for a better driving experience. I felt disapointed with F-Zero as it lacked style, charisma, and a real sense of interaction with the craft. The racing with 30+ craft was good but the multi-player aspect of the game was nothing to marvel at. The link up of wipeout on 2 seperate systems and tv's was a great experience but quite impractical as I never try to lug my 29' tv to my friends houses. I aint that strong and playing games on small screans ruins the feel of games for me. F-Zero wasnt a bad game just I dont think it is up there with the classic of the system ![]() N.B. I am talking about Wipeout as in the PSX version and not the N64 version which I have not had the chance to play and there for will make no coment on. It may well be that its conversion to the N64 doesnt match up to its origins on the PSX. [This message has been edited by darkminds (edited 26-05-2000).] |

Have to agree with you there Darkminds, F-Zero X is one of the N64 biggest disappointments for me, especially as the original F-Zero is one of my favourite games.
Interesting to see Da Cyborg, Body Harvest in your list. I liked the game very much for the first two levels, but got too frustrated by it from the third world on. Its a game I would love to see given an overhaul, maybe running on a next gen machine as it has so much potential. For me, ISS98 and 1080 are two of the games Ill most fondly remember. Seeing Mario64 for the first time and playing Wave Race are also N64 highlights for me not forgetting the amazing Goldeneye.Yes, the N64 is far from dead in my eyes, although from a sales point of view I guess you could say that its almost over, with Japanese sales of PS2 outselling N64 at a ratio of 40>1 Its great to see that there are some classics left in the system yet, Perfect Dark, Dino Planet, and Conkers Bad Fur Day look fantastic, to name but a few. |

How can you all diss F-Zero X? Maybe you lack my skill at the game! The X Cup was the best thing ever! How satisfying was it to crash out 20+ enemies? Maybe you guys are just after fancy graphics, but when it comes to gameplay, F Zero X is UNBEATABLE. It's as much fun as Goldeneye and that is the benchmark 'gameplay game'.

oh come on!!!
I finished F-Zero in its entirety!!! Although I couldnt be bothed with that survival mode!!! I just felt let down maybe because I was expecting too much after playing the original so much. But I definatly wouldnt say its playability was up with 007!!! Multiplayer is no really any fun and single player although challenging wasnt as in depth as 007, I dont beleave a racing game ever can! Still it is an enjoyable game but not a cart I have touched for an age. ![]() |

Ok my turn, these games are not in any Top Ten order, to hard to do for some so its just a list, but they are the best N64 games that I think I would say are in my collection without a doubt man and will still be the best even after the machine has died, although a few other games could break in there, Banjo Tooie certainly looks cool, don't know about Dinosaur Planet though or Mickey's Speedway, sorry I mean Diddy Kong with Disney Characters, Mario Tennis looks smart aswell. Anyways here they are;
Goldeneye 1080 Snowboarding ISS Millennium Perfect Dark Zelda 64 Super Mario 64 Pilotwings 64 Wave Race 64 Starfox 64 Mario Kart 64 Excite Bike 64 I know I know, there are eleven, but hey I don't care they are all classic. Also all of the above games are the best examples of their genre on any console platform, beats all the PC can offer to bar a debate with the first person shooters which would be valid. These titles wont be bettered until Nintendo release their new Great White Shark Machine and they all get updates, its as simple as that, well it would take an unreal effort from someone to try and better these Mighty Monstrosities of Gameplay Excellence me thinks. Graphics may and also have surpassed but the intuitive, sublime, perfect play mechanics of virtually all these titles still remains unparalleled in my opinion. The best Football game, the best Platform game, the best Action/Adventure game, the best 2 Shootem-up games, the best Multiplayer Racing game, the best Bike Racing game, the best Snowboarding game, the best Water Based Racing game, the best Sim/Arcade game and the best Space Shootem-up game. Me thinks I am seeing a pattern here man. Nintendo are the best software house on the planet, Shigeru Miyamoto is truely a God, I am positively drooling at the thought of the next Mario and a new Metroid would be stunning I reckon, The big N's 1st Party developers in Rare and Leftfield are certainly up there with them to and others such as Square, Capcom, Konami, Namco, Sega, Polyphony(only recently mind you). Well anyways there ya go. Oh and Perfect Dark is so F*cking Awesome its unreal, and Excite Bike is nearly as great a gameplay experience as the Rare Magnum Opus, and hell I used to hate Bike games generally on anything after the 16bit platforms, The course design is unequalled and the physics, balanced with the perfect control and tight playability is superb, it really is. Off to play with Miss Joanna Dark for the night now, mmmmm I cant wait. Take care all, Alpha out...... ![]() [This message has been edited by alphacentauri (edited 27-05-2000).] |

BEEP BEEP BEEP Target Acquired
BEEP Target Locked FIRE http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/teeth.gif I am sorry I don’t think I can be reading this correctly but did you really write “starfox aka lylat wars, wave race and pilot wings- 3 of the shi.ttest n64 game around!” Are you a total masochist? Thank you for telling me the name of the PAL version of Starfox this immediately tells us that you like waiting for you games and are quite content to read about games in magazines while we get to play when they are released in the US and Japan; (my my isn’t Perfect Dark an amazing game, I don’t mean doesn’t it look amazing in the magazine and don’t the reviewers say it is amazing I mean doesn’t it play well, isn’t the multiplayer game a real rush? What you don’t know? oh well maybe you can tell us in a few months.) I was merely questioning a couple of choices of Da Cyborg for the Top 10 Games when the console dies out, in my opinion after playing F-Zero to death I would not rate it quite so highly. It does not achieve what I believe it had the capability to achieve, the original was really quite ground breaking utilizing new grafix technology and unique game play, the follow-up I felt let down by. Some of the ideas were nice but there was something missing from the game that didn’t really fill me with a sense of awe as some of the other title on the system do/did. Wave Race, STARFOX & Pilot Wings were such title, Wave Race and Pilot Wings are utterly unique gaming experiences for the console market, they all offer innovation, amazing game play and a quality of design that has been missing for a long time from N64 releases until we approach its final hours. Pilot wings is one of the most challenging and most rewarding games I have ever played, the difference in control of each of the craft is amazing. You can just fly around the landscapes and just be enthralled in the experience, this is an extraordinary gaming experience and that is why it gets into my Top 10. Wave Race, in what other games have you seen such attention being paid to the physics of the game, this game has again a unique control experience with draws you further into the appreciation of the game. You are playing, obviously, in the sea and the waves actually have tides, this is not even seen in the arcade Jet Ski game! In the arcade the waves are merely blue bumps on the surface of the ocean, in wave race they actually move to ward the shore. Excite bike has paid attention to details such as handling and it also responds and feels ‘realistic’ (before this use of word is jumped on I shall define my meaning. I do not mean that these games relay the actual sense of riding these machines but they recreate a feeling that makes you believe you could be, and skill is required to keep the craft under total control) Starfox is an addictive and very rewarding game, it has goals that you want to work toward so that after completing it you want to go back and finish all the modes and possible routs. The game requires an increase in skill of the player that can only be achieved through dedicated playing of the game, and the game play of this game gives you the motivation to want to achieve this level of skill. I can understand that people who may pick up these games to play in a shop or who have little gaming ability would find them too hard to be bothered with as each of them have a learning curve that although does give initial satisfaction too gain total appreciation of the titles long term playing of the game is required. Games that offer total satisfaction within the first hours of play have no durability and will soon be gathering dust on your shelf. I hope that this has given you a little insight into why these games should be considered to be some of the top titles on the machine. If your only argument is that they are sh.t then please try a little harder in backing up such useless claims, or at least have fun trying. http://forums.gameplay.com/ubb/laughing.gif |

da Cyborg You must live a very sad life: 'I'm not familiar with 'Zelda 46'. LOL.' Remember this? Yes you seemed to have thought that was funny! Is this true? Oh dear you have obviously no sense of humour and if you think thats funny then I suggest you watch a 'comedy show' im sure you will be p*ssing yourself with excitement. 'Zelda 64' Is simply referring to the Nindendo(Now get this!) 64 version of the game of Zelda. If you are so excited about the REAL name of this game then will 'The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time' Satisfy your obvious immature mind? Well I hope I never have to do this again oh dear...

I was bitterly disapointed with Pilotwings 64. It was a fine technolgical demo of what the 64 was originally capable of, and the flight dynamics were good, but it just wasn't that much fun to play. However, thats just my opinion.
quote:
Wave Race, in what other games have you seen such attention being paid to the physics of the game, this game has again a unique control experience with draws you further into the appreciation of the game.

Ahh, now this is a classic. The water physics are amazing as are the wave effects. Ive yet to see water better portrayed in a video game. You are right in saying that Leftfield's Excitebike has the same realistic qualities, but I think that 1080 is the king of the castle. The control of the snowboarder was sublime. ------------------ otaku homepage import gamer |
